Shining Hope Farms together with the Special Olympics of Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties offers a Special Olympics Program.
Riders receive eight weekly lessons and the program culminates in a Regional Equestrian Invitational Horse Show at the Mecklenburg Farm which takes place sometime in the spring or summer each year. Participants include individuals from Gaston, Mecklenburg, and surrounding counties. The event helps to qualify riders for the State Competition in Raleigh, but most of all it enables participants to show off their talents with family and friends, to bond with their teammates and coaches, and to have a good time.
The riders are amazing to watch as they steer through obstacles such as weaving cones, crossing a bridge, riding through a gate, going around a barrel, o backing their horse through two narrow poles. Previous classes have included showmanship, equitation, dressage, and working trail available for both independent and supportive riders.
